Houston Ramen History

At-Home Instant Noodles

Having eaten the tasty noodles of the instant variety since the early 1980’s, beginning with Beef Flavored Kung-Fu Instant Oriental Noodle Soup packs to soon later, all the assortment of flavors offered by Maruchan, created a great foundation for a long passion to ingest such delicious carbohydrates ongoing.

Kung-Fu and Maruchan definitely hit a plateau very quickly but continued to be staples for a long time until NongShim Gourmet Spicy was discovered in the late 1990’s. Attempts to upgrade the ramen with vegetables, egg drops, and other various sandwich meats was the new normal, as this mode of ramen eating was the known and familiar for another decade.

Early Restaurants Serving Ramen In Houston

It was only around the 2000’s, when we became aware and ventured out to try different restaurants offering ramen, and for the most part found them all enjoyable. It wasn’t until maybe a little after 2010 where ramen eating in Houston became even more interesting, experiencing explosive growth in the niche industry, which is what led to the creation of this website, although a slight late, but always believed in "better late than never."

Shinyokohama Ramen Museum

Although Houston Ramen has tried ramen in various major cities across the United States, Houston Ramen has never travelled overseas to taste ramen in its mother country, Japan. According to Wikipedia, Ramen evolved from the Chinese living in Japan. Nevertheless, Houston Ramen knows that it has only a limited tasting palette for ramen, but looks forward to one day - a more traditional or original ramen experience in Japan.
